Lucy is here

Lucy came home from a puppy workshop at Julie’s new house yesterday. Kathryn brought her, and we took her home.

So far everything is peaceful. OK, there’s been a little grumping from Chico, but Lucy says “OK, your house, your rules.” She quickly grasped that “the couch is by invitation only for you” and if Chico is up there, he reinforces the message with his Billy Idol lip curl, which I am not in love with, but Lucy definitely respects.

Lucy’s happy in the kitchen, Chico in the living room, even with the barrier down. It is possible for them to lie so they can each see me, but not each other, and that seems to work for all of us.

Lucy seems to have come to us with a well started recall, but she’s on leash or a long line for now, the last thing I need to do is lose someone else’s dog, right?

Now off to try Chico’s and my luck at ALL Dogs Gym and some USDAA agility.

Plenty of pups

On Tuesday, when it was a perfect fall day, Chico and I went for a walk with eight, yes, EIGHT, other dogs.

That's baby Breeze in the front, the smallest of the other dogs.

That’s baby Mini-Aussie Breeze in the front, the smallest and youngest of the other dogs.

Three Portuguese Water Dogs, three Australian Shepherds, a Mini-Aussie, and Pointer.  Chico did not engage in interactive play, but he was calm and happy.

When we were moving it was easier. At rest stops he was into checking in with me.

Group begging was way too intense for Chico to participate.

I’m really proud of him. It was a beautiful day and I could participate in the human social interactions and he could, sort of, hang with the dogs.

I believe they call it "parallel play" when kids do it.

I believe they call it “parallel play” when kids do it.

At the end of the day when the puppy needed carrying I was able to do that and Chico was not at all troubled.

No, I was not holding the puppy at this moment, but Chico was no closer to me when I had her. Unlike young Tate who was jumping and nipping to get to her while puppy was in Tate's mom's arms.

OK, Chico isn’t completely relaxed in this picture, but we were all clotted up and I was staying back to take the picture.

We certainly could not have done this a couple years ago. My heart sings, and holds great hope for Lucy’s successful, if likely temporary (she has things to do in a few months – the breed rings calls for her, and I am highly unlikely to be the one who takes her there), integration to our little pack here at the house.

This afternoon we’re of to do a little USDAA agility, tomorrow is my first workshop as Lucy’s handler, Sunday Chico, Lucy and I go back to the USDAA trial – Chico will run in Pairs with his friend Jonah, and play some Snooker – our first time in P2, I think; and Lucy will look around. Yee-ha! Here we go.

Oh happy day!

Chico always has dog’s choice at the horse barn. The car door is open, the crate door is open. He can join me in playing with the horse or not. For over a year Chico has declined to get out of the car at the barn. Today, he got out, helped me untack after a ride, brush and put away Dakota, then he helped me move horses from field to field.

This is huge for us.

Last August Dakota was spooked by something on a ride, he shied and I fell off, he spun to run home and even holding tight to the reins I couldn’t stop him, so I had to let him go. Poor Chico was walking behind us when this all happened, so in his world, for absolutely no reason, the horse turned and charged him, and I proved that I have no control over that big, funny-smelling thing. And on that day, he was pretty much spot on.

My own riding frequency went way down because it was just too much work to ride by myself. Dakota was too nervous to be any fun. Recently Jill has been doing a great job of texting me to let me know when she has a lesson going out and I was able to ride yesterday afternoon and this morning. On one of the rides, I remarked that maybe if Chico saw me come back to the barn on top of the horse a few dozen times, he might change his opinion of my ability to control Dakota.

Today when we got back, I looked into the crate from on top of Dakota and said to Chico “See, I came back on top of the horse again!” and darned if he didn’t get out of the crate and come welcome me back. Then he helped me do all the rest of my chores, happy, wagging tail, running ahead when we took horses to the far field.

I could have cried for joy.

Lucy

Lucy (aka Something or Other Kennel’s Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, aka Lucille Marie when she’s bad) is part of a litter of collies that were planned and conceived just before the breeder was diagnosed with some awful and terminal disease. My friend Kathryn is a collie breeder and she, like some other breeders, agreed to take one of the puppies. Kathryn also has two puppies about the same age, around 8 months, and all her other collies, so poor Lucy isn’t having much training.

I on the other hand am interested in training another dog, and in seeing if Chico can live with a second, younger, dog in the house. When Julie suggested I borrow Lucy for a while I perked right up; Kathryn was amenable, I’m interested, and we’ll see what Chico thinks when Lucy comes to stay next month. Chico met Lucy at a Labor Day picnic at Julie’s, and he didn’t hate her, and she didn’t immediately want to rough house . . . there’s a good chance this will work out well for all of us.

It’ll be interesting, and maybe hard to get pictures, but I’ll keep you posted.

Isn’t she pretty? Hope I can keep her white in the white places!

Weave poles and a jump

Today I threw some of our agility props into the car and set them up in the field at the new house.
We did some jumping and weaving, and Chico did some unauthorized sniffing, and we’ll do more there as time goes on.

After almost six years,

I may be getting the hang of this dog training stuff.

Last night, Chico wouldn’t eat dinner, kibble with some wet food on top. Said it was poison and he wanted nothing to do with it. He said the same thing about it this morning.

So I grabbed a half cup of kibble and the clicker and started working on a hind end awareness exercise we’re learning and darned if Chico wasn’t, after a little convincing that there was nothing better coming, more than happy to work for kibble.

Just plain kibble. Something he almost always insists isn’t very interesting. Amazing what a truly empty tummy can motivate a guy to do.

Two Lights

image

South of Portland, Maine is a park and light house, and perhaps even more importantly, a lobster shack also called Two Lights. I picked up a visiting friend at the bus in Dover last week, on a day that was impossibly hot for September and decided that a proper welcome would be lunch at Two Lights.
Of course Chico was withme, he very much enjoyed his time on the rocks.
