OK, this is only marginally dog related, but the image as a whole pleases me.

Walking in the Nurota Walnut Reserve

image

The blank rock face rises to become the stone wall of a house, at the very top, leaning over the edge, is this dog…barking, barking, barking at us for being so close to his house. He’s pretty tiny in this picture, but there, a little black and white spot against the sky.

Street dog in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

image

I see some, though not a terribly lot, of smaller dogs on the street here. They don’t look starved, they seem car savvy, and they clearly have someplace to be…they’re not lost, they are going some place.

Samarkand

image

This picture is taken looking out of our room in Samarkand. The exterior of the building is blank walls, inside is a small paradise garden. Morning Glories grow up grape vines, shading the walkways and balconies of the inner courtyard.
I have heard from Julie that Chico is doing well, fitting in with her pack of four, plus another visiting dog.

If all is going to plan…

when this posts, I will be on an airplane, somewhere between JFK and Istanbul, Turkey, on the way to a trip-of-a-lifetime. I’m realizing a many year dream to see the Silk Road in Central Asia. I’ll ride horses in Kyrgyzstan; visit Samarkand, Bukhara, Tashkent, Ferghana, and Kiva – legendary trading oases of the Silk Road –  in Uzbekistan, and then spend a month in Turkey (at the other end of the Silk Road) – three weeks accompanying a friend while he does field research on textiles, then a week riding in Cappidocia.

“What,” you ask, “will Chico do? And how am I going to keep up with his activities?” He is staying with his “Auntie Julie” – our great agility, and pretty-much-everything-dog-related, coach Julie Daniels. If we can get the technology to cooperate, Julie has kindly agreed to post the occasional picture and update on Chico’s activities while I am gone, so you (and I) can keep up with him. Chico leads a more active life when he stays with Julie than he does here with me. They’re runners, with loads of trails behind the house; they have multiple dogs, so he is always working on socialization – sometimes I wonder if he would prefer to live at her house all the time.

I intend (that’s INTEND, reality may be different) to make posts when I can during the trip. I’m sure there are dogs where I am going, and I am sure they will be of interest to me, so some of the posts may even be canine-related.

AKC in Shelburne, VT, Saturday’s runs

I won’t string this out forever, below are Saturday’s runs.

The day started with Jumpers (all the contact obstacles were already off the course from the previous afternoon’s Jumpers), and ended with Standard.

In Jumpers, Chico dropped a bar, got the wrong (harder) end of the tunnel, did most of his weave poles, but with good attitude; then I forgot the course, but we had a nice closing once I remembered where we were supposed to go (blush).

Here’s that run:

In Standard, Chico missed number four because I didn’t support him well enough (I looked away before he committed to the jump) and I didn’t even notice, and if I had, we could have gone back. Dang. This handler needs to be more aware out there on the course! But other than that, and a small miscommunication at the bottom of the A-Frame, it was a pretty nice run.

And here’s that run:

AKC in Vermont, Jumpers

After all the Standard runs, the course builders (yay for volunteers!) cleared away the contact obstacles (A-Frame, Dogwalk, Teeter), and the tire, and the trial moved on into Jumpers runs. In Jumpers, we were competing at the Excellent level* and it was, again, pretty overwhelming. And, because of that, I failed to notice that Chico missed obstacle number two (at this level, that eliminated us from qualifying) , then we experienced possibly the slowest weave poles ever, but after that, it was a nice run, at a dignified (though not class wining) pace. Which was actually just fine for my sore hip, thank you very much.

Here’s the run:

* I learned not long ago that just because we have three qualifying runs at the Open level, we don’t have to move up to Excellent. I can stay at Open until I feel we’re both ready to move on. What a relief.
