Toss it

Julie has been video recording a lot of our runs lately, the good ones, the bad ones – who knows going in. But here’s the cool thing she does – after you watch the “bad” one…she erases it. It’s over, you know what to work on, you don’t need to reinforce the wrong by watching it over and over; disappear it.

I like it.

In that spirit, I’d like to stick to saving here only videos about which I have good things to say. So, here’s our Performance Speed Jumping run from a couple weeks ago. There was some tricky handling in the back and while I bought myself a refusal (he went past the intended jump), I didn’t get an off course (he didn’t take a different jump instead of the intended one). But the very best thing is the vigor with which Chico finally attacks the weaves on that second time through them.

Refusals don’t count, as long as you can get through the course and are faster than X percent of the dogs in the class, you get a Q, which we did. That means we have two PSJ Qs in our pocket now, and while we need lots of practice to actually be competitive there, we are now entitled to go try our luck at Cynosport this October. So, that’s cool, happened a lot sooner than I thought.

Newest Stuffie

Every once in a while I find a cute stuffed dog in the children’s section of a thrift shop and buy it for Chico to play with. When we traveled two years ago, we had the first Stuffie and Chico would carry it in and out of hotel rooms while I carried my bags.

Now we have another. And this morning Chico wouldn’t give it up prior to a walk, and he wouldn’t take it up the road, only up the long driveway behind the house. And he took it all the way. Up and back.

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my!

Well, not really, but I have been feeling a bit wild-eyed lately, planning a kitchen, probably without enough professional help and it has kept me from sharing a fun run from what is now close to two weeks ago.

It’s me and Chico, not giving a hoot about anything but doing our version of going ninety miles an hour and caring more about speed than about exact precision. Look at that dog when he’s down on the table – happy, happy, happy.

And I’m pretty happy about this Performance Speed Jumping run from that weekend too. Here Chico owns the weaves, once he gets started right. No refusals called in this class, so we’re slow but qualifying.

And that’s a goal attained. We have plenty of room for improvement between now and October, but when that time comes around, we’re eligible to enter Performance Speed Jumping at nationals, Cynosport. I didn’t think we’d do that before summer.

Open water!

The past week sped by as I considered appliances for my kitchen and made daily visits to the work site to decide things like where does the shower end, and would the toilet be better over here. It’s quite the deal, but there are enough walls up now that I can start to get a sense of the interior space.

Chico and I also pruned the two apple trees down at the house, I tried to open up the centers of them without taking out so much wood that I kill them.

Since I have spent so much time in my head, this afternoon we took a walk at the Madison Boulder. There we saw this delightful sight:

IMG_20150322_131521_820Open water. The stream is flowing freely, at least it is in this sunny spot.

IMG_20150322_131530_431Chico was much more interested in the smells on that tree than he was the water.

And we met a Golden Retriever who wouldn’t listen to its owner’s recall, and refused to take Chico’s imitation of Cujo seriously, insisting on play. I finally picked Chico up and stomped my foot at the dog and told it gently to “git!” which it did. But it didn’t go home with the person and the other dogs, maybe it isn’t even really with them on the walk, just out on its own and along for the ride (as it were). Whatever the situation, that Golden was by our car when we got back, Chico was off leash, and the Golden handled the situation quite well, turning and shoving its rear end into Chico’s face and not moving while he sniffed. My gut said it wasn’t going to fight no matter what Chico said and that Chico was going to say less if I ignored; so I walked past them to open the car, looking only out of the corner of my eye, and when the refuge of the crate in the car was available, Chico happily took it. I gave him a ton of cookies, shut the door, and thanked that Golden for being such a socially skilled canine.

Weaves

Here’s Chico in a practice session at Julie’s:

Hear him roar, he owns them suckers.

Here’s a compilation of our weaves at the AKC trial a couple weeks ago:

Not a lot of weave pole ownership there.

One thing I learned from reviewing the videos to edit them into the “weaves highlights” was how really, really, really pissed off at me Chico gets when I stop on course. Of course, this is something Julie has told me for like two years, but I think finally got it.

So, this past weekend, on Sunday, after I spent the prior evening reviewing and editing video, I decided that “do you see” and “ninety miles an hour” were our games du jour.

It was fun and interesting and I paid for the videos, so I’ll share ’em here in a day or three.

Distance, distraction, duration

Those are the three factors that can be used to up the ante when you’re teaching a behavior. A trick that Chico can do at home becomes instantly harder when he’s asked to do it in front of someone visiting us, even harder if he’s asked to do it out in public. That’s one reason we can ace difficult agility challenges at Julie’s but get defeated by much simpler courses when we’re at a trial.

We’ve been working on backing up on cue. In a fit of in-originality, I copied many others and called it “beep-beep,” like the noise a truck makes when it goes into reverse. We stopped by a store in Tamworth yesterday, the store where the young women who work there sometimes squeal like Chico is a rock star when he comes in, the store where he gets a cookie for tricks, and he was more than willing to do beep-beep. Not only was he willing to do it in the store, but he did it on a cue from someone else. That’s right, he did it for Marena. How cool is that?

How good is my dog?

This morning I realized that in a fit of searching for something else last night, I left two sources of treats well within Chico’s reach for twelve or fourteen hours and he didn’t go shopping.

Yes, tidy house makes tidy mind, and we’re working on that.

Sounds like fun, let’s go!

Vermont based agility club NOMAD is having a three day trial in this summer. Held at the Trapp Family Lodge. The singing von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame moved to Vermont when they left Austira and settled in Vermont. Twenty-something years ago I worked on a dude ranch with one of the granddaughters and I guess I have always wanted a reason to go visit the place.

But I am pretty sure we won’t be staying there. Rooms seem to be about $275 a night. That times several nights equals a LOT of entry fees. It’s a tourist area, but that is shoulder season, there must be more reasonably priced accommodation.

Or maybe that is the weekend I try renting a small camper van. I keep meaning to do that.

Standard and Pairs runs

For those of you who like travel stories better, sorry, but today you get two more agility runs.

Third class of the day was Standard and this was our least effective run, I let down on Chico. It was tough at the start line, he’s standing there yelling and I desperately work to connect with him. Then we get off to a pretty good, if not stylish, start. I was sure he had a fly off of the see-saw and I groaned because I thought I pulled him off before he got into the contact, but the judge didn’t see it that way…anyhow, no reason not to keep it to myself. Then the weaves go wrong and the table goes wrong then the next jump goes wrong, then I’m standing almost in front of the tunnel and after that, I fear all I wanted was to get out of the ring. Like I said, not our best run as a team.

But I’m a firm believer in “Ya pays yur money, ya takes yur chances,” so we stuck around for P2 Pairs. We ran second and while the little Chiweenie (Chihuaha/Dachshund cross, go figure) named Ellie is running, you can hear me engaging Chico. Last time we ran second when it was our time to go, he stood there and barked like he did at the start line in Standard. So, while we were beyond slow off the line, I did have a dog when we headed out. And I got a nice set of weave poles. On the no-so-much side, I sent him off course and I stopped dead and he ran all around and came back to me and we went on. The send to the jump after the tire didn’t work so well, but given that this was the end of a long day for both of us, and how much better we did than we did in Standard, I’m happy.

So, this weekend, we’ll go try Performance Speed Jumping again, and see what happens on the Jumpers course. The two classes are neatly grouped on Saturday afternoon, allowing us to go to the Framer’s Market and the dump in the morning. Sunday we’re taking off from trialing, and I’m going to volunteer at the sled dog races the Wonalancet Outdoor Club puts on every year (at least, every year that the weather permits). It’s a fun way to help my community, and it’s fun to see the dogs who love their work so much get to do it.

Last weekend’s USDAA Jumpers and Gamblers

We had four runs last weekend and since Paws in Action was there, I have video of all four. I’ll give you two today and two the next time, how about that?

First class of the day was P3 Jumpers. We arrived just in time for me to walk the course and get Chico a poop walk and into the building in time to run. I was a bit high on adrenaline when I walked because five minutes away from the trial I had managed to miss by three or four inches the rear bumper of the truck that passed us on the right and ended up across the road in front of me with its nose in the snowbank.

Result of that was, Annie forgot the course. Chico saved the run the first time (you can hear the crowd when he doesn’t take the off course jump), but the second time, I was really off in my direction, and since he is so well trained, he took what I pointed him at, so we just went with that course.

But what a good job Chico did of engaging with the leash-as-tug-toy and then of dropping it and getting ready to work.

Next was Gamblers, and here’s what matters to me about this run. We played the Do You See game with the A frame, that got Chico engaged with the course instead of the commotion behind him, outside the ring. He made 1, 2, 3 into a serpentine, which I had not seen, I thought I had him lined up to do 1, 2, 3 in a straight line, but he made it fancier. It was not a super smooth transition from the dog walk to the gamble (the last three obstacles Chico must complete with me staying on the far side of that line of the floor), my slow down cue didn’t come fast enough for Chico to read it, he thought we were charging from the dog walk to whatever was next, and that wasn’t the tunnel…but we got it.

And that was the third leg of our P2 Gamblers, so we got the fancy title ribbon I posted a picture of that day and next time we get to move up and play with the big kids in Masters/P3 Gamblers.
